Sonning Golf Club lies in the heart of Berkshire on the A4 between Maidenhead and Reading. The golf course was designed by one of the greatest of all golf course architects Harry Colt and J H Taylor, who won the Open Championship five times. Taylor opened the course in 1914 and was one of the famous “Great Triumvirate” of Open winners – Braid, Taylor & Vardon. Max Faulkner was an Assistant Professional at Sonning from 1936 to 1937, he later went on to win The Open at Royal Portrush in 1951 with a score of 285.

The course measures 6,366 yards and has a par and standard scratch of 70. The course is easy to walk with tree-lined fairways and is fondly remembered by all who play it. The course plays longer than its yardage due to the elevations of several greens and fairways and although originally a heath land course, there is now an abundance of mature trees and shrubs all around the course. The greens are true and fast, and have many testing swales and idiosyncrasies.

Peter Alliss has described our sixth hole as “one of the best short holes in the South of England”.

The course is in excellent condition throughout the year, and as the Michelin Guide says “it is worth a detour”.
